Extracting DNA from Fruit

Yesterday, Thursday 17 November, 2022, we did a unique experiment in Life Science Class which was extracting the DNA out of bananas.

Firstly, we prepared all the material we needed. We gathered some water; dishwashing liquid and salt then mixed it together. Next, we broke the banana into 4 pieces and smashed it up in a plastic bag.

After we finished smashing the bananas, we added the dishwashing liquid into the plastic bag with the smashed banana. Following this, we took a sieve to remove the unwanted materials that were inside.

after that, we took the methanol and added this into the banana-dishwashing liquid solution. This helped to separate the DNA from the solution. The DNA of the banana seemed to suddenly appear.

For the end of the lesson, we took the microscope to observe the DNA and we saw the things that looked like threads. That was the DNA of the bananas. It meant we were successful with our experiment.
